Partly printed DS, signed “James Madison” as president and “Jas. Monroe” as secretary of state, one page on vellum, 16 x 10.25, February 20, 1815. A military commission for John Neal, Jr. as first lieutenant in the Forty-fifth Regiment of Infantry. The embossed seal remains intact at lower left. In good condition, with intersecting folds, allover scattered toning and soiling, diagonal crease between two letters of Madison’s last name, and both signatures a shade light but fully legible.
