Description

Scarce 1870 Grant-signed ship’s papers for a whaling voyage

Partly printed DS as president, signed “U. S. Grant,” one page, 22 x 17, September 28, 1870. A four-language ship’s papers issued to James H. Knowles, “master or commander of the bark called George Norland … lying at present in the port of New Bedford, bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, Stores, and Utensils for a whaling voyage….” Countersigned by Hamilton Fish as secretary of state. The embossed paper seal and affixed revenue stamp remain intact at the lower edge. Pinholes at intersecting folds and a few short edge separations (expert reinforcements to reverse), a few light creases, and very subtle brush to last letter of signature, otherwise fine, fresh condition.
