1860 ship’s papers for a Pacific-bound whaling vessel

Partly printed DS as president, one page, 21.75 x 16.75, November 20, 1860. A four-language ship’s papers issued to Davis A. Blake, “master or commander of the barque called Active … lying at present in the port of New Bedford, bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, Stores, and Utensils for a whaling voyage….” Countersigned by Lewis Cass as secretary of state. The embossed paper seal remains intact at the bottom of the English-language column. Partial separations and small holes along intersecting folds (horizontal fold just touching tops of Buchanan’s initials; light vertical fold through “B”; expert archival reinforcements to reverse), light scattered soiling and staining, and a few small chips and tears, otherwise very good condition.
