“Ben Franklin” at sea: 1858 ship’s papers for a whaling vessel named for the American statesman

Partly printed DS as president, one page, 22 x 17.5, November 16, 1858. A four-language ship’s papers issued to George E. Brown, “master or commander of the bark called Benjamin Franklin … lying at present in the port of Fall River … and laden with Provisions, Stores, and Utensils for a whaling voyage….” Countersigned by William L. Marcy as secretary of state. The embossed paper seal remains intact in the English-language column. Partial separations along intersecting folds, light wrinkling, and a few tears, otherwise fine, bright condition. The signature is crisp, clean, and completely unaffected.
