Description

Presidential prophecy? Garfield’s discontent with Hayes, “I hope we shall be able to win the next Congress, possibly the next Presidency.”

Twentieth President of the United States (1881) and the second U.S. President to be assassinated (Abraham Lincoln was the first). His term was the second shortest in U.S. history, after William Henry Harrison’s. Holding office from March to September of 1881, President Garfield was in office for a total of just six months and fifteen days. LS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 5 x 8, House of Representatives letterhead, November 21, 1877. Letter written to Captain A. W. Stills, one year after Rutherford B. Hayes’ election. Garfield was discovering that he did not have the influence with the President that he had hoped for. Responding to some rumors, he was already considering the future elections. In part, “What ignorant lyers (sic) those fellows are who charge me with supporting the Southern Pacific Railroad. The scamps ought to know that as a member of the Railroad Committee of last Congress, I made a report against the bill, which was printed and scattered all over the country…There is much ground for a depression of feeling among our Party, but the doings of the Democrats of the House, in regard to the Army and finance and in fact everything else, that I hope we shall be able to win the next Congress, possibly the next Presidency.” In the next election Garfield would win the presidency. Intersecting folds, some slight toning and a couple small tears to right edge, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
