Description

Agassiz competes against the Civil War for funds

Eminent and versatile Swiss-born American zoologist and geologist (1807–1873) who carried out much of his research as a longtime faculty member at Harvard, where he was also instrumental in building the university’s enviable natural history collection. ALS signed “L. Agassiz,” one page, 5.25 x 6, August 9, 1864. Letter to Mr. E. P. Whipple. In part, “the papers have contained a few remarks counting a national meeting of Surin citizens gathered…express their sympathy for our cause. I have this morning reviewed a Surin paper containing the address there & then voted to the American people and I enclose it to you, that you may give it the proper…among our periodicals.” Surin was an access point for the Khmer temples of Phanom Rung historical park, Prasat Preah Vihear and potentially Angkor Wat. Phanom Rung is a Khmer temple complex set on the rim of the extinct volcano at 1,300 feet above sea level, in Buriram province on the Isan region of Thailand. Around this time, Agassiz was campaigning for funds and resources for American science and for his research projects. The Civil War was not helping his cause as he lost several students to military service. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a few trivial brushes. R&R COA.
