Description

On his most famous work: “People often think I was [a Stalinist] because of my “Elegy to the Spanish Republic’ series”

Important American artist (1915–1991) who was one of the leading figures of the abstract expressionist movement. TLS signed “Robert M.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, February 28, 1975. Motherwell writes to Nancy MacDonald at Spanish Refugee Aid regarding his participation in a book project. In part: “[Peter] Rosoff gave me the impression of having worked in the U.S. State Department (though he had a marked British accent) and as I remember was a casualty of the Joe McCarthy era. He talked very bitterly about the U.S. State Department and it crossed my mind that he might have been a Stalinist. (People often think I was because of my ‘Elegy to the Spanish Republic’ series.) However, he seemed very dedicated to the project and stated that Miró, Antonia Tapies and Matta had all agreed to contribute graphics…. During October I had five major operations and for a while afterward had marked memory lapses, though I am fine now….” Motherwell has also made several small corrections to the text. Accompanied by a carbon of MacDonald’s original letter to Motherwell. Staple holes and a hint of handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
