Description

Not quite Arabia: The adventurer-turned-R.A.F. officer describes his “pleasant living-place ... almost in ... a very man-haunted and artificial sea”

British archaeologist, soldier, adventurer, and writer (1888–1935) immortalized in the epic 1962 screen biography Lawrence of Arabia. He attained international renown for his role as British liaison in the Arab Revolt of 1916–1918, which he recounted in his best-selling memoir Seven Pillars of Wisdom. ALS signed “T. E. S.” [for his assumed name, Thomas Edward Shaw] and in the handwritten header as “A/C Shaw,” one page, 4.5 x 8.5, April 18, 1929. Lawrence writes to H. Williamson in North Devon. In full: “I am waiting for long evenings and warmer days, to come and see you. Life is very long, & I like to stick very close to a new camp, at first, learning it. Cattewater is going to be a pleasant living-place, I think. We are almost in the sea: but a very man-haunted and artificial sea, in the midst of Plymouth Sound. So in May or June we will have to try to come together.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Lawrence’s hand. Intersecting mailing folds and a few minor wrinkles, otherwise fine, clean condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
