LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.5, May 11, 1835. Madison writes to Thomas G. Addison. In part: “In my present condition crippled as it is by a chronic complaint with the addition of a new inroad on my health, and the addition of a new inroad on my health [sic], and addition of both to the enfeebling effects of my very advanced age, I cannot undertake a compliance with your request on the important and controverted subjects to which it relates. I can only therefore with this apology tender my acknowledgements for the kind sentiments you have expressed and a sincere return of my best wishes for your welfare.” At the time of writing, Madison was 84 years old; he died just over a year later, on June 28, 1836. In very good, bright condition, with horizontal tear touching a few words of text (stabilized by expert archival reinforcement to entire reverse), faint intersecting mailing folds (one vertical fold just touching “a” of last name), and a touch of mild scattered soiling.
