Saxophonist, bandleader, and musician. In the 1950s, he played tenor and soprano sax with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. In the 1960s he led his own groups and forever changed jazz with his brilliant experimentation and improvisation. His later recordings reflected his belief that music was a form of spiritual expression. His recordings include Giant Steps, My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme. He died of liver cancer at the age of 41 in 1967. Business check, drawn on the Jowcol Music Inc. account, 8.5 x 3.25, filled out and signed by Coltrane, payable to Cash for $300, June 30, 1967.
