Description

Engaged to his second First Lady: “I am sure you know how truly and wonderfully fortunate a man I am”

TLS as president, one page, 6 x 7.5, White House letterhead, October 18, 1915. Wilson writes to Walter E. Hope, who would later serve as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Hoover administration. In full: “I appreciate your letter of congratulation very warmly. I had heard Mrs. Galt [Edith Bolling Galt, his fiancée] speak of having met you, and since you know here I am sure you know how truly and wonderfully fortunate a man I am.” After the death of his first wife, Ellen, in 1914, Wilson met Edith Bolling Galt (1872–1961) early in the following year. When the two were married on December 18, 1915, Wilson became the third president to be married while in office, and the only president to have two First Ladies. A few faint marginal smudges, otherwise fine, bright condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
