Attractive war-dated partially printed DS as secretary of state, signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, November 7, 1812. An order titled “Additional Instruction to the Public and Private Armed Vessels of the United States.” In full: “The public and private armed vessels of the United States are not to interrupt any British unarmed vessels bound to Sable Island, and laden with supplies for the humane establishment at that place. By Command of the President of the United States.” Sable Island, the stormy “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” is located 111 miles southeast of Nova Scotia. The first successful settlement on Sable Island, the “humane establishment” to which the document refers, was founded in 1801 by the crew of a life-saving station. The island is now home to a population of six permanent residents. Light horizontal folds, a touch of mild wrinkling, and small, expertly restored hole to blank portion, otherwise fine, fresh, extraordinarily bright condition.
