British writer (1870–1945) who first came to prominence in the 1890s as the young intimate companion of Oscar Wilde. After Douglas’ father, Lord Queensbury, accused Wilde of being a “somdomite” [sic], Wilde filed the libel lawsuit that led to his own conviction and two-year prison term. ALS signed “Alfred Douglas,” one page both sides, 5.75 x 7, black-bordered personal letterhead, no date [1940s]. Douglas writes to an unnamed gentleman. In full: “I don’t know exactly what you want but I have copied out this sonnet of mine for you. It originally appeared in 1941 in the Daily Mail & an autograph copy of it was sold … for £9.00 & another copy for £15 at the Bazaar in aid of Yugo-Slavia.” Tiny marginal edge tear, otherwise very fine, fresh condition.
