Description

THE “EXTINCTION” OF FREEDOM? A superb—yet ominous—quote from the 1967 gubernatorial inauguration of RONALD REAGAN

Extraordinary AQS, on an off-white 8.5 x 11 sheet of Reagan’s personal stationery. In full: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. Ronald Reagan.” This quote was taken from then-California Governor Reagan’s inaugural address to the public on January 5, 1967. The consignor, chairman of the Wisconsin Young Republican Convention in the mid-1960s, explains that he originally obtained the item from Reagan as the result of a request for contributions to a fund-raising auction, and retained the item when the auction was cancelled due to insufficient donations. A couple unobtrusive bends, otherwise very fine, immaculate condition. Such strongly worded and politically significant statements in Reagan’s own hand are of the utmost interest and rarity. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
