Description

Satire is thirsty business: Voltaire accepts a shipment of wine

French philosopher and author (1694–1778), born François-Marie Arouet, whose wit, literary skill, and originality of thought made him one of the most distinctive and influential figures of the Enlightenment. An ardent activist and defender of civil liberties, he wrote prolifically, producing scores of important works on philosophy, history, and science, and satirizing religion, politics, and social institutions. His most enduring work, the “picaresque” novel Candide (1759), has attained a secure place in the canon of Western literature. LS in French, signed “Voltaire,” one page both sides, 6 x 7.5, May 24, 1762. Voltaire writes to Monsieur LeB—, “Conseiller du Parlement,” in Dijon, mentioning that a shipment of very good wine has arrived, and promising to make a toast to the Parliament. Voltaire adds a handwritten sentiment (“With great respect, your humble and obedient servant”) before signing at the conclusion. The integral address leaf remains intact. In fine condition, with light intersecting mailing folds (lightly touching signature and sentiment), seal-related hole to address panel (not affecting any writing), and faint show-through of ink. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
