Description

During a turbulent political year, and only two weeks after challenging Comptroller Fitch to a duel, Roosevelt bolsters a supporter

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 10.5, Police Department of the City of New York letterhead, May 19, 1896. Letter to Albert Englehart. In full, “It is with sincere regret that I find myself unable to accept your kind invitation. The chance for doing good work for the Republican Party in New York City lies mainly in such organizations as yours. We have to trust to just such bodies of gentlemen as those that you represent to work for victory at the polls, and then to make this victory mean something by keeping our Republican representatives, whether executive or legislative, up to the highest standard in the performance of their duties. I congratulate the party on the existence of such a Club as yours, and I wish you all possible success.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Even overall toning, intersecting folds, one through the first “e” in signature, and some light mirroring of text from premature folding, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
