“Plenty of work for the dismissed warriors”: Shaw weighs in on Britain’s impending postwar labor troubles

Unsigned manuscript in Shaw’s hand, a response to a typewritten question posed to him related to Britain’s postwar economy, one page, 7 x 7.5, no date [circa 1945]. The typewritten question reads as follows: “It has been stated that the cessation of war industries of all descriptions will result in the dismissal of 9,000,000 workers in the U.S.A., and probably from 4 to 5,000,000 in this country employed directly or indirectly through the war, excluding the armed forces. Do you think it possible for the Labour Government to prevent the twin evils of unemployment and reduced wages in the long yearned peace?” Shaw replies: “There is plenty of work for the dismissed warriors to do. But it must be planned and organized for them. It can be done. We shall see whether it will be done. The alternative is the dole. All the governments are on trial.” In very good condition, with several horizontal folds (one lightly touching writing), wrinkling, and scattered light soiling and staining. R&R COA.
