INTERNATIONAL TRADE: JEFFERSON and MADISON sign ship’s papers for a merchant vessel bound for the Dominican Republic

Partially printed DS, boldly signed by Jefferson as president, “Th: Jefferson,” and Madison as secretary of state, “James Madison,” one page, 20.5 x 15.5, September 11, 1807. A four-language ship’s papers issued to Robert Taggart of Philadelphia, “master or commander of the ship called Fabius … bound for City of S[ant]o Domingo and laden with Sundries.” The embossed paper seal remains intact at center left. Matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 36.5 x 23.25. In very good condition, with scattered toning, wrinkling (touching Jefferson’s last name), intersecting folds (partial separations; holes at intersections touching text; vertical fold through Jefferson’s last name and just touching Madison’s), chips to top margin (partially restored), and show-through from writing on reverse. Both signatures are dark, boldly penned, and mostly unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
