Mack remembers a close friend: “He was one of the finest men that I ever had the pleasure of meeting.”

Once a catcher, but made his mark as a manager. After a stint at the helm of Pittsburgh, he assumed control of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 and continued for 50 years until retirement at the age of 88. Mack is best remembered as a dignified, scorecard-waving leader in a business suit, who won five World Series crowns and built two dynasties. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 7, American Baseball Club of Philadelphia letterhead, February 26, 1936. Letter to a friend regarding another friend’s passing. In full, “Yours received with clipping pertaining to the death of Michael J. Flanagan. The day previous to his death wrote him a nice letter. Have been in touch with the family since his death. He was one of the finest men that I ever had the pleasure of meeting. Hope to see you in Boston in April.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
