Description

“The people of Washington were naturally a little surprised, who thought I was on a ‘retired’ rest”

Teacher and humanitarian (1821–1912) best known for organizing the relief organization the American Red Cross. ALS, six pages on four sheets, 5.26 x 6.25, March 25, 1902. A lengthy letter to Miss K—. In part: “[Dr. H] thinks as we do that it is neither wise nor kind to make conditions for person to be held to at the sacrifice of comfort and safety or possible risk of life…. Miss Joyce of the [Washington] Times came directly to me … to find what I was doing. I could not put her off. She is bright and friendly. She wouldn’t believe that I had been doing nothing so long…. I showed her the books and told her some things as modestly as I could, and the result is as you see. She takes no notes, and of course could not help some inaccuracies. The people of Washington were naturally a little surprised, who thought I was on a ‘retired’ rest…. I gave her the only copies of the new books, to use where she felt sure they would be useful…. I wish you could have heard … Garfield Butler Grant & Parker talk politics, and discuss the political situation. Some, when here, Republicans—some Democrats, all the same there, perfect unanimity between them & their opinions. They do not recollect the present President….” Small hole to top of each page (touching a few words and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
