Months before her own death, the widowed First Lady tries to meet collector demand: “I am again out of Mr. Harding’s autographs.... Please send me a few more of his canceled checks”

Wife of President Warren G. Harding (1860–1924) and First Lady from 1921 to 1923. TLS, one page, 4.75 x 6.75, black-bordered stationery, May 14, 1924. Mrs. Harding writes to Charles Shaffner in Harding’s hometown of Marion, Ohio. In part: “I regret to say that I am again out of Mr. Harding’s autographs. Occasionally, I have a case that is so appealing I dislike to refuse. If not too much trouble, please send me a few more of his canceled checks….” In fine condition, with a hint of mild soiling.
