American inventor and manufacturer (1849-1940) who developed a successful dry-plate photography process and, with his twin brother, Francis, cofounded the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, which built the famous “Stanley Steamer.” Uncommon ALS signed “F. O. Stanley,” one page both sides, 6 x 9.25, Stanley Dry Plate Co. letterhead, January 23, 1900. Stanley writes to “Friend Almont.” In part: “I send you by express today a book which … is not published in this country…. I have become a convert to the doctrine advocated and have eaten nothing from the animal kingdom since Nov. 5th except milk butter & cheese. I am already much benefited and shall continue on my present ‘uric free acid diet’ so long as I am improving. For years I have eaten largely of meat and for the last four years have suffered a great deal from uric acid poisoning without knowing the cause of my trouble…. The book … will show you the wisdom of your own action in reference to diet. My brother and I have constructed an engine that is a daisy. I [sic] has no packing rings, but the piston is 1 1/2″ long, and of cast iron, hollow and very light.
