American politician (1809–1891) who served as Lincoln’s first vice president. ALS signed “H. Hamlin,” one lightly lined page, 6.5 x 8.5, March 1853. Hamlin writes to the Secretary of the Treasury. In part: “You will recollect that you were so kind as to assure me that you would appoint a young man from Maine, to a clerkship in your Department. I would recommend Dr. Charles R. Dunlop of Brunswick…. He is a man of liberal education good habits & well qualified….” The letter retains its integral leaf with a docket in Hamlin’s hand, including the signature “H. Hamlin’s letter….” Mild handling wear and small loss to one corner just touching last letter of signature, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
