Description

Scarce presidential appointment for the future founder of the Naval War College

Scarce partially printed DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page on vellum, 11 x 8, September 26, 1849. An appointment for Stephen R. Luce as “Passed Midshipman” in the Navy of the United States. Countersigned by William B. Preston as Secretary of the Navy. Taylor’s appointee, Stephen B. Luce (1827–1917), eventually rose to the rank of admiral. In the 1880s, Luce founded the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island, and served as its first president. Archivally framed with an engraved plaque to an overall size of 17.75 x 18.75. Vertical fold touching first letter of signature, slight smudge to first letter from excess ink, and a hint of subtle wrinkling and soiling, otherwise fine, bright condition. A most elusive format, with an exceptional association, from this president who occupied the White House for little over a year before dying in office! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
