Scarce partially printed DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page on vellum, 11 x 8, September 26, 1849. An appointment for Stephen R. Luce as “Passed Midshipman” in the Navy of the United States. Countersigned by William B. Preston as Secretary of the Navy. Taylor’s appointee, Stephen B. Luce (1827–1917), eventually rose to the rank of admiral. In the 1880s, Luce founded the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island, and served as its first president. Archivally framed with an engraved plaque to an overall size of 17.75 x 18.75. Vertical fold touching first letter of signature, slight smudge to first letter from excess ink, and a hint of subtle wrinkling and soiling, otherwise fine, bright condition.
