Description

ENSURING LAW AND ORDER IN THE OLD WEST: LINCOLN appoints a territorial justice for New Mexico

Partially printed DS, one page, 19.5 x 14.75, January 20, 1864. An appointment for Perry E. Brocchus as Associate Justice of the Territory of New Mexico for a term of four years. Brocchus (1846–1875), who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in both New Mexico and Utah, became known for his suspicion and hard-line approach toward the “lawless and seditious” practices of the Mormons in Utah, including the taking of Indian lands and the evergreen (and then, relatively new) issue of polygamy. The document is countersigned by William Seward as Secretary of State. Matted and framed with an engraved plaque to an overall size of 33.5 x 28.5. Intersecting folds (small separations at intersections; one vertical fold very lightly touching first letter of signature), scattered light toning (touching about half of first name), and scattered stains. otherwise very good condition. The signature is otherwise exceptionally dark and clear. A seldom-seen format for Lincoln! Oversized. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
