Description

Barton bandages the the Red Cross: “which has been so unfortunately impaired by the deplorable attitude of the small, disaffected party in Washington.”

Teacher and humanitarian (1821–1912) best known for organizing the relief organization the American Red Cross. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, American National Red Cross letterhead, August 17, 1903. Letter of thanks to a supporter as Barton works to rebuild her organization. In part, “Your kindly expressions of interest mean so much to me at this time, when I endeavouring, with all the energy I posses, to restore to the Red Cross the entire respect and confidence of the whole people, which has been so unfortunately impaired by the deplorable attitude of the small, disaffected party in Washington. The sweeping, drastic changes that were made in the by-laws in December last were rendered necessary as the only means of rescuing the society from an intolerable, impossible position. That object being accomplished, it is now my purpose to restore to the by-laws and to every detail of the organization, fair, just and equitable provisions, that shall bring to the Red Cross the most enlightened freedom of action, and shall restore to it the respect and confidence and love of the whole people.” In fine condition, with scattered light edge wear and a light overall shade of toning. R&R COA.
