“THIS FANTASTIC, AND SOMETIMES FRUSTRATING BUSINESS”: EISENHOWER writes to his Deputy Budget Director

Group of eight TLS as president, two signed “Dwight D. Eisenhower” and six signed “D. E.,” all addressed to Deputy Director of the Bureau of the Budget Robert E. Merriam, each one page on White House letterhead, 1957–1960. Some excerpts follow. September 23, 1957: “I understand that there is awaiting me in Washington a copy of ‘Going Into Politics’.... Because we both have a little interest in this fantastic, and sometimes frustrating business, I know I shall find your book of particular interest....” September 10, 1958: “I am delighted that you are to take on the duties of Deputy Assistant to the President for Interdepartmental Affairs. Accordingly I am accepting your resignation as Deputy Director of the Bureau of the Budget....” October 1, 1958: “I shall enjoy working more closely with you than has been possible in the past....” December 29, 1958: “As we in the administration so well know, 1958 has had its moments of tension, and indeed, its crises.... I look forward to our work in 1959 with the confidence inspired by your record of accomplishment....” March 17, 1959: “I am very glad to learn of your willingness to serve as a member of the Joint Federal-State Committee.... I want to assure you of my appreciation....” July 6, 1959: “Mrs. Eisenhower and I would like to make a brief written record of our gratitude for the kindness of the White House staff in presenting to us two pine trees for planting at the farm. Nothing could have pleased us more....” December 29, 1959: “As the last few days of the 1950 decade draw to a close ... I am impelled to try to express to you my gratitude for your services to the nation during the year and my appreciation of your personal assistance to me.... The home stretch is upon us. A thoroughbred tries to make his best effort in the last furlong.... I have no fear that you will not exert your energies to make all America proud, as I am proud....” December 20, 1960: “In these final days of this Administration ... I strive once more to find the words to express the depth of my indebtedness to you.... I , for one, refuse to countenance [the group] breaking up. I would rather think of us working—in diverse localities to be sure—as vigorously as ever to forward the principles and policies which we all supported because of their importance to the prosperity and progress of our country and to the securing of a just and durable peace.... Let me thank you once again .... and at the same time urge you to keep the ranks closed and the colors flying....” Also included are two printed letters of thanks from Eisenhower to White House staff, several TLS to Merriam from other individuals (including Henry Cabot Lodge and secretarial letters from Richard Nixon’s office), an 8 x 10 photo signed and inscribed in felt tip, “To Robert Merriam with best wishes from Dick Nixon,” and an engraved invitation to a White House luncheon. A hint of scattered mild toning and soiling (a few tiny spots), otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
