Description

No rest for the ex-president: “Everything worries him and weighs on him”

Wife of Grover Cleveland and First Lady from 1886 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. The Clevelands remain the only presidential couple to be married in the White House. ALS signed “Frances F. Cleveland,” two pages both sides, 4.25 x 6.75, embossed personal letterhead, June 5, 1902. Cleveland writes to her nephew, Fred Bacon. In part: “I wonder if you would misunderstand if I should ask you to postpone bringing your friend out until fall. Your uncle is back—terribly pressed with things to do—with commencement beginning Saturday—& company staying with us, all through—and far from well—everything worries him & weighs on him—& people being brought out to see him always seems rather formidable to him.: He has two addresses to make immediately after Commencement, & we are setting off as soon as we can…. I know you don’t want to add to anxieties with him & I think perhaps your coming now would so…. Some people can’t be told—but you can….” At the time his wife penned this letter, Cleveland was a trustee at Princeton University, where he sometimes came into conflict with the university’s president, Woodrow Wilson. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
