The only colonial governor to side with the Americans during the Revolutionary War (1710–1785), Washington referred to Trumbull as “Brother Jonathan.” Manuscript DS, signed “Johth. Trumbull,” one page both sides, 8 x 6.75, January 13, 1778. A pay order that reads, in part: “Pay Colo[nel] Joseph Trumbull Five thousand pounds Lawfull Money … Council of Safety & Charge the State….” Trumbull has added his signed endorsement on the reverse: “Pay the Contents to Mr. Jesse Brown in Behalf of Col. Jos. Trumbull [Trumbull’s son, who died six months later], Jonth. Trumbull.” A few minor spots and tiny edge tears at folds, otherwise fine, clean condition. R&R COA.
