Description

“Baseball couldn’t shut him out”: Three from Veeck

Longtime owner of the Chicago White Sox, he signed the first black player in the American League. An unabashed promoter, he was responsible for the exploding scoreboard at Comiskey Park in Chicago, and in 1952 he sent a midget, Eddie Gaedel, to bat in a game for the Browns. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. Three items: Cover from the March 15, 1976 issue of Sports Illustrated, signed in black felt tip, “To L— Shields, Best wishes, Bill Veeck”; and two 1977 TLS on White Sox letterhead, sending thanks for writing about White Sox broadcasts and for replying to a ballot on announcers, respectively. In fine condition overall, with folds, label remnants, and slightly irregular ink adhesion to SI cover, and light mailing fold touching signature of one letter. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
