Description

Give till it hurts: Scarce 1659 letter from the patron saint of charities

French saint (1581–1660) who devoted his life to aiding charitable causes. Among the organizations he founded were an order of secular priests who worked in rural areas, known as the Vincentians, as well as the Sisters of Charity. He was canonized by Clement XII in 1737. Uncommon LS in French, signed “Vincent DePaul,” one page, 4.25 x 6.25, February 27, 1659. Vincent writes to a male acquaintance inquiring about the well-being of an associate. The integral address leaf with wax and paper seal remains intact. Originally from the Boys’ Town Collection. Handsomely matted and framed to an overall size of 18.25 x 20.25. In very good condition, with scattered small holes to body of text (with expert archival repairs) and mild scattered soiling. The signature is clear, dark, and completely unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
