American army officer (1895–1993) who commanded the 82nd Airborne Division in Europe during World War II. He later served as Supreme Commander of United Nations forces in Korea (1951–52) and of NATO forces in Europe (1951–53) and as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army (1953–55).
