On his nomination as Secretary of Defense

Army general (1880–1959) whose ambitious plan for rebuilding Europe in the aftermath of World War II earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1955. TLS signed “G. C. Marshall,” one page, 6.5 x 8.5, Red Cross letterhead, September 18, 1950. Marshall writes to Major George Fielding Eliot in New York City. In full: “Thank you for your telegram regarding my nomination to the Defense post. Your generous expressions and good wishes are very much appreciated.” Marshall took office as Secretary of Defense three days later, on September 21. Mild soiling, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
