Description

Pinckney fought in the Revolution at Charleston, Brandywine, and Savannah before being captured. He was in the South Carolina legislature and went to the Constitutional Convention, where he was a key negotiator and signed the document. He declined Washington’s offers of the Supreme Court and Secretaries of War and State, but accepted Minister to France. During the XYZ affair, when French agents demanded a bribe, he refused and prepared the army for war against France. He later ran for President in 1804 and 1808. Ink signature, “Charles Cotesworth Pickney,” on an off-white 7 x 1 slip. Professional repair to a clean separation between middle and last name of signature and a small area of paper loss to bottom, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
