Description

The discoverer of X-rays turns seventy: “What touched me most was a telegram by Hindenburg”

Distinguished German physicist (1845–1923) who discovered X-rays in 1895, for which he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. ALS in German, signed “W. C. Röntgen,” one page both sides, 4.25 x 7, April 16, 1915. Röntgen writes to an unspecified “highly esteemed colleague.” In part (translated): “With great pleasure I have received your and your dear wife’s best wishes for my seventieth birthday. Please accept my warmest thanks for that surprise. We spent the day here with a few friends, buried and nearly overwhelmed by good and beautiful things. What touched me most was a telegram by Hindenburg whom I do not even know personally. It says a lot about the man and the conditions in our Fatherland.” In fine, fresh condition, with a few tiny, unobtrusive spots. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
