Description

Third Baron Raleigh (1842 – 1919) was an English physicist who (with William Ramsay) discovered the element argon, an achievement that earned him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904. ALS signed “Raleigh,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, May 5, 1888. Polite rejection of a paper presented to Raleigh. In part, “I am afraid your paper is of too speculative of character for the Royal Society…the rule that a paper must be presented by fellows.” Letter is affixed by its second integral page to an off-white 6.75 x 8 album page. In fine condition. R&R COA.
