Description

Pure science: Pasteur presents France’s resources to a monarch

French scientist and bacteriologist whose studies on fermentation led to the conclusion that it was caused by bacteria, proving the germ theory of disease; he also developed a successful vaccine for rabies, which hitherto had been universally fatal. LS in French, signed “L. Pasteur,” one page both sides, 8.25 x 10.5, Comite de Patronage des Etudiants Etrangers, Sorbonne letterhead, February 15, 1894. Letter to an unidentified monarch, perhaps King Philippe VII. In part, “On behalf of the Foreign Students Patronage Committee, please allow me to offer your Majesty this volume containing a general list of France’s scientific resources, from the standpoint of Higher Education and Technical Education. Please accept, your Majesty, my profoundest respects.” Pasteur was appointed professor at the Sorbonne in 1867 and remained there until his death in 1895. While there he applied his process of pasteurization to beer and began his investigation into animal diseases. In fine condition, with a touch of scattered light soiling. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
