Description

Letter to Jefferson Davis bearing a war-dated Judah Benjamin endorsement

War-dated handwritten and unsigned endorsement from Benjamin on the reverse of a one page letter to Confederate President Jefferson Davis from James Barbour, dated February 24, 1862. Barbour writes: “Sir, I am interested by the committee appointed under the enclosed resolution to enquire at what hour tomorrow it will be convenient to receive them.” Benjamin has endorsed the reverse center panel: “Feb. 24 1862 / Jas. Barbour, Richmond / Covering a Resolution of the general assembly of the state asking an interview with the President to discuss the best way of contributing to the defense of the commonwealth.” Document is also stamped “Examined for War Records” and “Copied.” In very good condition, with light toning to endorsed panel, slight separation along folds, a couple small areas of paper loss and scattered creases. James Barbour Terrill (1838-1864), from Warm Springs, Virginia, graduated from VMI in 1858. During the Civil War he saw extensive service and rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. He was killed in action at Bethesda Church, Virginia in 1864.
