“A TRAINING GROUND FOR CAMPAIGNING”: Collection of eight REAGAN letters to an old G.E. colleague

Collection of eight TLS from Reagan to Robert W. Jackson, seven signed as “Ron” and one as “Ronnie,” 1966–1975. Jackson, a marketing executive at General Electric, had accompanied Reagan in the 1950s when Reagan, then a spokesman for the company, made personal appearances around the country. Most of the letters date from Reagan’s tenure as Governor of California and include thanks, personal greetings, and some interesting political observations. Some excerpts follow. January 13, 1966: “Maybe all those G.E. tours are now going to pay off as having been a training ground for campaigning....” January 3, 1968: “It seems apparent now that my duties here in Sacramento will allow very little time for appearances outside Sacramento until the Legislature adjourns....” April 2, 1968: “I received the brochures on your land.... It sounds pretty tempting, and sometimes I’d like to sneak out, go there myself, and not come back.” October 15, 1968: “The public must have an understanding of the problems facing their schools....” March 20, 1969: “It looks like they are closing in on us ‘deductible’ farmers. We need a crop support program for loopholes.” February 18, 1969: “I read the newspaper article you sent regarding dental care for needy children.... I do favor the expansion of private programs such as that implemented by Dr. Janklow....” May 20, 1975: “I happen to believe ... that the Proposition 20 result, namely the coastal commissions, have behaved badly and ... a challenge should be made against what I consider to be infringement on the private property rights of individuals....” Accompanying the letters are nine unsigned original 10 x 8 photos, circa 1950s, showing Reagan at various General Electric–related functions, several also including wife Nancy. Also included is a group of ephemeral items, among them invitations, tickets (including an unused ticket to the 1964 GOP National Convention), memos, and clippings related to Reagan and his junkets for G.E. Paperclip rust stain or staple holes to top margin of a few letters, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
