Bandleader and composer nicknamed The March King. A brilliant man who sought to reach a mass audience through his music, he formed his own band in 1892 and carefully selected the music to include in his band’s repertoire. Vintage 3.5 x 5.5 three-quarter length postcard portrait photo of Sousa in his band uniform, signed vertically in fountain pen, “John Philip Sousa, 1905,” and adding three bars of music from The Diplomat above his signature. Postcard is addressed in another hand on reverse with text reading, “19/2/05, This autograph was written for me by John Philip Sousa. While he & his band were at the Town Hall.” In fine condition, with a hint of light silvering and an impression from postmark on reverse. R&R COA.
