Famed American naturalist (1837–1921) best known for his writings on nature and travel. Outstanding and characterful vintage oversized matte-finish 10 x 13.25 Pach Brothers photo of the elderly Burroughs, removably housed in its original 14 x 17.5 presentation mat with oval aperture, signed and inscribed in ink on the mat, “To my new friend, Dr. Edward Quintard with the warm regards of John Burroughs.” Quintard was the physician for the family of Samuel Clemens, and it is likely that he became Burrough’s “new friend” through an introduction by Clemens. Previously sold at Christie’s in 1994. In very good condition, with tiny scratch to background of image, and mild soiling and very faint stains, a few surface marks, and light edge wear to mat, detracting minimally from the overall appearance. Signed Burroughs images of this size and quality are quite uncommon. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
