Description

Offering aid to the widow of naval hero Stephen Decatur ”from the high respect in which I hold the memory of your late husband”

Distinguished statesman and three-time presidential candidate (1777–1852) who became known as the Great Compromiser for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 9, 1824. Clay writes to Susan Decatur. In part: “I received your note covering some papers respecting the recapture of the Philadelphia frigate. Without being now able to express any definitive opinion on the claim, which you propose to prefer to Congress, in consequence of that gallant enterprize, I can only at present say that if it should be laid before Congress, I will give it every consideration what is due from the valor what was displayed, from the high respect in which I hold the memory of your late husband….” Susan Decatur, widow of American naval officer Stephen Decatur (1779–1820), had written to Clay and a number of other notable figures in an attempt to claim “prize” money that was customarily awarded for capturing or destroying an enemy vessel during war. The specific incident in question involved an 1803 victory by then-Lieutenant Decatur during the First Barbary War against Tripoli, which inspired no less a figure than Nelson to characterize it as “the most bold and daring act of the age.” In fine condition, with a touch of mild soiling and a few tiny spots. R&R COA.
