SEEKING A HIGHER HORSEPOWER?: Tractor titan JOHN DEERE makes a generous donation to a church

American manufacturer (1804–1886) whose name became synonymous with the durable, high-quality agricultural implements whose mass production he pioneered. Bank check, 7.25 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Deere, payable to Trustees, Congregational Church for $500.00, July 21, 1871. The check bears an adhesive two-cent revenue stamp at upper left. In clean, crisp, fine condition, with usual neat punch and cut cancellation and bank stamps, no faults affecting the signature.
