Description

French surgeon and biologist (1873–1944) who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1912 for his work related to the transplantation of blood vessels and organs. His views on eugenics, including his shocking advocacy of using gas chambers to rid humanity of “inferior stock,” permanently tarnished his reputation. TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11, Rockefeller Institute letterhead, January 20, 1937. Carrel writes to Hamilton Holt, president of Rollins College. In part: “I am very sorry to say that it now seems quite impossible for me to plan to visit Florida in February…. Believe that I am most appreciative of your thoughtfulness in wishing to confer an honorary degree upon me….” In very good condition, with mailing fold touching signature, scattered wrinkling and soiling, and staple holes. The signature is bold and dark. R&R COA.
