Description

Eisenhower listens to his conscience: “I found it impossible to approve the bill...In the long run it would have hurt all farmers.”

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, The White House, Washington letterhead, April 19, 1956. In part: “It was with intense disappointment and regret that I found it impossible to approve the bill, for I wanted to sign it if I possibly could. After studying and searching my mind and my conscience, I felt that I had no alternative but to veto it. In the short run it would have hurt more farmers than it would have helped. In the long run it would have hurt all farmers. It is my hope that Congress will quickly enact a sound soil bank act…Our farmers want it.” In fine condition. Archivally shadow box framed with a gold-inlaid, sterling silver portrait plate issued in a limited edition by the Franklin Mint in the early-to-mid 1970s, to an overall size of 18 x 28.5. Eisenhower would go on to pass a new farm bill the following month, allowing the government to store agricultural surplus. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
