Description

A royal “toy” “Thank you very much for the beautiful little cannon”

Duke of Clarence and Avondale (1864–1892) and eldest son of the future Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark. Some twentieth-century historians pegged Albert as a prime suspect in the infamous Jack the Ripper murders; such theories have since been mostly discounted. Early ALS signed “Edward,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, H.M.S. Britannia letterhead, November 12, 1878. Albert, then in training with his brother, the future George V, writes to Admiral Foley, superintendent of the shipyard on the Isle of Wight. In full: “I thank you very much for the beautiful little cannon which you so kindly sent me made from the Eurydice. I shall always keep it in memory of poor Captain Hare and the officers and men who went down with her.” In fine, fresh condition. R&R COA.
