1864: On the day he finally met Grant face to face, LINCOLN appoints a personal acquaintance who served on General Hooker’s staff

Partly printed DS, signed as president “Abraham Lincoln,” one page on vellum, 14.75 x 19, March 8, 1864. An appointment for Charles H. Kibler as Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of captain. Kibler (died 1914), a personal acquaintance of Lincoln, served on General Hooker’s staff during the Civil War and participated in a number of pivotal battles and actions, including Shiloh, Vicksburg, Corinth, Sherman’s March, and others. He later became a respected lawyer and circuit court judge in Ohio. On the day Lincoln signed this document, he met Ulysses S. Grant for the first time; on the following day, Grant was commissioned as lieutenant general. Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as secretary of war. The embossed paper seal remains intact at upper left. Archivally suede matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 34 x 27.5. In fine condition, with usual minor scattered soiling and toning, light rippling, faint folds (one lightly touching signatures), mounting remnants to reverse (slightly visible from the front), and signatures a shade light but clear and fully legible.
