Description

Bug zapper: Uncommon letter from the pioneering “Panama Canal” doctor

American physician (1854–1920) who was Surgeon General of the U. S. Army from 1914–1918. He became best known for his far-reaching efforts in the treatment and prevention of yellow fever and malaria that proved vital during the construction of the Panama Canal. TLS signed “W. C. Gorgas,” one page, 5 x 8, Office of the Surgeon General letterhead, April 17, 1915. Gorgas writes to Professor W. T. Sedgwick at MIT. In part: “I am much obliged for your offer of service, and shall myself [sic] of it if I make up an expedition for Servia. Nothing yet has been definitely settled as to my going.” In fine, clean condition. A notable medical scarcity! R&R COA.
