Description

Sherman confides to General Edward Townsend: “I am satisfied with my own course in the Main, though were it to do over again I might steer clear of the rocks on which I bumped hard”

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” four lightly lined pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, December 9, 1883. Letter to General Edward Townsend. In part, “I sat up late last night to complete the reading of your volume of Anecdotes of the War…You have furnished solutions for many open questions and have thrown light on the interior working of the machinery of Governmn’t - Probably no man was ever surrounded with more difficulties than was Stanton and I am more than willing to concede to him all his friends should claim an intense patriotism and a kind heart when reached, but a bad way of showing it. Halleck also was of the same general notion…I am satisfied with my own course in the Main, though were it to do over again I might steer clear of the rocks on which I bumped hard, but I do believe I do bear in affectionate memory all the men who in their respective spheres of action fulfilled their respective offices, always true & faithful to the Service they swore in youth to defend and maintain.” In fine condition, with expected folds, with signature resting atop one of the folds. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
