Description

BALL BARON: Scarce letter from the Hall of Famer and sporting goods pioneer

Early baseball player and manager (1850–1915) who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939. Spalding’s name would become synonymous with the still-extant sporting goods company he formed with his brothers after his retirement from baseball, and his 1911 book America’s National Game came to be recognized as one of the first “scholarly” publications on that sport. Uncommon ALS signed “S,” one page, 8.5 x 11, A. G. Spalding & Bros. letterhead, November 11, 1895. Spalding writes to merchant Paul G. Klinkenberg in Kendallville, Indiana. In part: “We herewith send you a detailed statement of your a/c as it appears in our ledger, showing the balance 5.35 as claimed by us. We shall feel obliged by your checking same over & painting out any errors on our part....” Accompanied by a printed 1895 circular and two handwritten 1895 business letters to Klinkenberg from Spalding employee George Riddell, one mentioning that he had “quite a nice time at Marion, some very fine girls there, but excuse me, we are getting at a delicate point.” A few light wrinkles, file holes, and a hint of toning at edges, otherwise fine, clean condition. LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
